They say that horse racing is glamorous. But for a long time now, Hoppegarten has been much less establishment than working class. One would think that Germany’s oldest horse racing venue developed from the Emperor’s Track to a nationally-owned track to the Bionade Biedermeier theme park that it is now. As a matter of fact, this location in the outskirts of Berlin is a combination of all three, and as such it reflects the checkered history of this city. In 2010, Daniel Seiffert went there to take photographs of hatted members of Wilmersdorf’s upper middle class as well as seasoned gamblers from East Berlin.
