The term ‘habitat’ – ‘abito’ in Italian – is used to denote a person’s environment or behaviour. But, in colloquial Italian, the word ‘abito’ can also mean ‘dress’ or – more to the point, perhaps – ‘disguise’. Michele Caliari’s work is concerned with the city as a place of everyday masquerade, with the ways the people who live in it and the spaces that constitute it disguise themselves, consciously or unconsciously. Berlin, a city that has always seemed very much like a giant stage, does the unheard-of and sucks its simulacra back in, thus becoming a projection of itself.
